Background

The Danish Rail Regulatory Body was established on 1 July 2010 as a market and competition monitoring body on the railway market and carries out supervisory and complaints functions in the area.

The Danish Rail Regulatory Body is an independent board which monitors the competitive situation on the market for rail transport services and carries out supervisory and complaints functions in the railway area in relation to the allocation of infrastructure, collection of fees and passenger rights.

The Danish Rail Regulatory Body consists of a chairman, six other members and a number of deputies. The members of the Danish Rail Regulatory Body are appointed for a period of 4 years. The board's members have railway expertise, including railway technical expertise, socio-economic and legal expertise as well as competition and consumer law expertise.

The Danish Rail Regulatory Body is solely subject to the instructions of the Chairman of the Danish Rail Regulatory Body, but is housed in the Danish Transport Agency's premises.

Rules of Procedure and Funding

The Danish Rail Regulatory Body's work is carried out according to rules of procedure drawn up in accordance with current legislation. The Danish Rail Regulatory Body's operation is financed by the railway companies which the board supervises and is also shown by appropriations in the Finance Act.
